Isn't that a little bit pathetic for those who buy cards and flowers but disrespect their mothers and fathers the other 363 days a year?

There is innate goodness in motherhood, but not all mothers are innately good. So rather than have a Mother's Day, mightn't a May Day crowning or a Feast of the Annunciation celebrate and honor motherhood just as well, at it's ideal? As it is appointed in the Divine Will?

And what about those women who have to attend Mass and are wounded when they cannot stand for the mother's blessing, out of no fault of their own?

It's certainly not a bad holiday, and that honoring motherhood is something our society desperateness needs. But I feel like society honors "the liberated mother," the woman who adds on children as one of her accomplishments, counting herself valuable all the while because of something she takes on as a project. :/

Or am I just jaded? Could be!Christiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18107748184124761940noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8634535998124931936.post-43519078386977049132014-05-10T14:18:47.663-04:002014-05-10T14:18:47.663-04:00I celebrate Mother's day as a pro life and pro...I celebrate Mother's day as a pro life and pro family holiday. Mother's Day can be celebrated out of vanity and obligation (enter fallen human nature :) , but considering Honoring thy Father and Mother is a commandment, we need to do things regardless of how we feel. Also, having a woman's day or more emphasis on Mary etc. would be a great thing too; however, its absence doesn't negate the innate good of motherhood in general. Overall, I think it is a day which points to new life and is worth celebrating. I loved it..and I LOV...you say things so prettily!

I loved it..and I LOVE that you're willing to allow your husband to be 'not a gift giver'..when I so often hear women trying to force their men into roles they can't fill! Seth is a gift giver, but not at all the 'words of affirmation' type..I could try to make him be, but he'd always feel off-balance and uncertain..

And this is absolutely beautiful!
This type of woman does mother--whether by tending a garden, writing poetry, mentoring a younger person, or gathering spiritual children in her womb of prayer. All these things are mothering--fostering creation, being open to the fecund spirit--or rather, Spirit, as Our Lady was at the Annunciation. Being open to God's will in their lives, being docile in a way that is shockingly empowering, taking the hand of God and helping to shape creation in a way that means it will never again be the same, changing it for the better. They are co-creators with the Almighty.Mashahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943998810222103926noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8634535998124931936.post-91084720997080213522014-05-10T04:37:36.184-04:002014-05-10T04:37:36.184-04:00I did not know that about Mothering Sunday, and it...I did not know that about Mothering Sunday, and it's fascinating!

"As if fertility measured a woman's worth--and as if just being a mother would automatically make someone an awesome person."

Oh my gosh, yes!! Or Father's Day. It alone can ensure that I'm staying put here. :)

In the UK and Ireland Mother's Day has a Christian root, in Mothering Sunday. That, originally had nothing to do with mothers, but with mother churches, but since it involved going home, it became associated with mothers.

Of course there is also International Women's Day on March 8 every year to celebrate all women in our lives, but since it began as a Socialist holiday (though lost its politics when the snow drops and chocolate cake became a part of it), some circles like to ignore it, and only exalt motherhood. As if fertility measured a woman's worth--and as if just being a mother would automatically make someone an awesome person.
