Theme Thursday: Play

Once thing I look for in a cherished friendship is the ability for us to play with each other: to laugh, tease, be silly, take wild flight of fancy, to do the unexpected.  It saddens me that as my friends and I grew older, left college, and took on careers and spouses, we had less and less time to play.  To some extent, that's just a part of growing up; at the same time, I find that I feel something close to pity for those who can't play the way they used to, even a little bit, and maybe with the help of some natural consolation (alcohol!).

These photos are from our Monday morning jam.  We turn up my Youtube playlist or Pandora and dance ourselves silly.

Ours is a playful universe.  How else can a poet explain the existence of the platypus, and puppies?  Of sugar and refreshing cold spring water on hot summer days?  Of trees with branches for climbing?  And the way the seasons circle around each other like a dance, as if God said, "That was so much fun!  Let's do it again!"

Hope you have a lovely time at play today.  Clan Donaldson!

  5. Oh my goodness! This is just so, so lovely. Hilarious, beautiful pictures of your gorgeous boy and wonderful words to go with them. It's very true--we all need time for play (and naps as well, but that is another story). I wish I lived close enough for your dance parties! I have my own with my seven-year-old cousin but I would love to dance with you and your boy. And play some more with you, of course.

    1. We need recess and nap time, just like in the good old days. I wish we were closer, too. I feel very drawn to the New England climate, so who knows? Maybe someday. Playing--like going to a castle in Ireland and shouting out the words of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Yes.

  8. Obviously sugar exists so our bodies can metabolize it for our further functioning... and trees have branches to expedite their conversion of carbon to oxygen. But I gotta admit, you got me with puppies.

    1. But, but . . . God could have figured out a way for those things to get done without making them FUN!
